“Timothy, my son, I give you this instruction in keeping with the prophecies once made about you, so that by following them you may fight the good fight, holding on to faith and a good conscience. Some have rejected these and so have shipwrecked their faith.”
1 Tim. 1:18-19
Can man forget God?
Certainly! When we are caught up with the many pursuits of life – we have a tendency to forget the source of our life – until something happens and jolt us to our senses. Perhaps in the midst of the Covid 19 pandemic, more people are thinking about God as well as life and death issues.
The advice by Paul given to young Timothy is a timely reminder. How does a person “shipwreck his faith”?
Men and women who have grown up in the church, profess to be Christians and been active in church work – soon get caught up in the world system with its thirst for material gain and seek to climb the ladder of success—and little by little drift away from the church and gradually forget God.
As a result, some are no longer practising believers. When crisis comes, the person will feel the great impact. Committing our lives to God won’t deliver us from the problems of life, but faith in Jesus will give us an anchor to hold on to when the storms of life threaten to overwhelm us.
Sometimes life can be heart breaking. We ask why but no answer is forthcoming. We search for a light to see us through the night but are overcome by the darkness. But when we have a solid faith in Jesus, His grace will see us through.
May we daily remember to be dependent upon Him.
