Proverbs 18:21 says “The tongue can bring death or life; those who love to talk will reap the consequences.”

This is so very true because what you SAY is as important to what you DO – which can affect a person so much.

Therefore, we must consider carefully what do we say each day to others, including to our own family members and those who are close to us, because these are the ones that we may take for granted.

Sometimes, we may think that what we say is acceptable as long as they are facts and truth. Solomon said, “A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in a setting of silver.” (Prov. 25:11 ESV) The New Life translation put it as “Timely advice is lovely, like golden apples in a silver basket.” In other word, the scripture advise us that we must watch out for the right timing to say certain things. A good example is when a person is hurting, that may not be the right moment to try to correct him of his wrong. What the person need is your assurance and comfort – not your correction!

Spend some time to evaluate. Are my words filled with sarcasm? Is it filled with arrogance or pride? Am I filling the atmosphere with positive life giving words or am I contributing to a negative environment? Watch out – especially when your heart is filled with discontentment or anger – you may be spilling venom through your words because ‘out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks.” (Matt. 12:34).

Take this advice – “Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.” Eph. 4:29.

Let us speak life giving words!
