Free healthcare services for the lower income group

FREE MEDICAL CLINIC

In Malaysia today, thousands of people struggle to afford healthcare due to rising medical costs. To help ease this burden among the poor, Charis Christian Centre launch Charis Medical Clinic in 2015.

Charis Medical Clinic is a community programme that provides free primary healthcare services to people from the lower income group, particularly the refugee families living within the vicinity of Bukit Cheras and Taman Connaught. In a recent media report, it was stated that registered refugees with UNHCR (United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees) only obtain about 50% subsidy on foreigner rates at government hospitals. This puts a strain on the income of such families, who usually eke out a living doing manual jobs like washing dishes, working in restaurants, etc.

Charis Medical Clinic is conducted by a team of volunteers comprising doctors, dentists, pharmacists and ground workers. To date, the team has treated about 200 patients from these refugee families. Occasionally, this dedicated team would also travel to the orang asli settlement at Sungai Lui, Ulu Langat to offer primary healthcare services. With this community programme, it is hoped that the welfare of these needy families will improve.
