The Book of COLOSSIANS
SESSION 5: FAITHFUL IN CHRIST
The Colossians were marked by their Faith in Christ and their Faithfulness to him. Our quest for Christian Maturity includes staying faithful in Christ.
A. Why do we need to stay Faithful in Christ?
As Christians, we must stay faithful in Christ until Jesus returns, his second coming. Only then, our salvation is complete.
A. What does it mean to be Faithful in Christ?
To be Faithful in Christ simply means to be faithful to him and to all of his.
- To remain faithful to the GOSPEL of Jesus Christ.
The Gospel that brought forth our Faith in Christ (Session 1).
Remaining faithful to the gospel means to embrace it, trust in it, allow ourselves to grow from it, to witness and to share it. - To remain faithful to the PERSON of Jesus Christ.
The Supremacy of Christ (Session 2).
Remaining faithful to the person of Jesus Christ means to honour him, to revere him, and to allow him to take the rightful place in our hearts, to be the Supreme Lord over our lives, not just part of our lives, but all aspects of our lives. - To remain faithful to the NEW HUMANITY in Jesus Christ.
By his shed-blood on the Cross, we now gained Freedom in Christ (Session 3).
Remaining faithful to the New Humanity in Christ requires us to do two things. Firstly, to fully embrace the Truth, and secondly, to constantly reject the False.
For example, to fully embrace the Truth of our identity in Christ and to constantly reject false or mistaken identities. Our new humanity carries the identity of Christ.
Another example is to fully embrace the Truth of our attributes in Christ and to constantly reject false humility. Our new humanity carries the attributes of Christ. - To remain faithful to the NEW COMMUNITY in Jesus Christ.
Where walls of social barriers are broken down, and Christians are Living in Christ (Session 4).
Remaining faithful to the New Community means to accept and embrace one another in Christ. To faithfully live out the citizenship of heaven on earth, wherein everything is governed and ruled by LOVE. God is Love. And out of his overflowing of love to us, we are to love one another. Being faithful to the New Community in Christ requires us to love.
B. How are we to stay Faithful in Christ?
- We need to hold on Christ himself
v.2
Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful. - We need to hold on to one another in Christ
Our Christian Faith is not lived alone but together as the body of Christ. We need to spur and encourage one another to remain faithful to him.
The important relationships that we are to build in the Body of Christ includes:
- Comradeship
- Companionship
- Camaraderie
CONCLUSION
When we stay Faithful in Christ, the Word of God in Rev 2:10 promises us that we will receive the crown of life.
Revelation 2:10b
Jesus said: Be faithful unto death, and I will give you the crown of life.
